Castles and Palaces

Dornburg Castles

The three wonderful castles, the old castle, the Renaissance castle and the Rococo castle tower over Dornburg. The Grand Duke Carl August of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach owned them.

Today, the magnificent palace gardens full of flowers can be admired free of charge, but the buildings cost admission. Sometimes one of the castles is also used by the University of Jena. The local church, right next to the castle complex, is also worth a free visit. A little further into the village there is a recommendable ice cream parlour.

The easiest way to get there is by train to Dornburg station and then take a steep path up, which also includes stairs. It takes about 20 minutes to reach the castles.
